When we went from using physical paper maps to Sat Nav and GPS, we didn’t trust it simply because it existed. We trusted it because it showed its workings: routes, recalculations, traffic conditions, and estimated arrival times. AI needs the same treatment. Not automatic acceptance, but measurable proof that it’s behaving as expected.
As organisations move past the ‘why’ and ‘how’ of AI to the ‘what,’ — what it is doing and what it is producing — there needs to be a focus on the consistency, safety, and predictability of outputs.
Theory and potential only go so far. Tangible outcomes matter. But results without context don’t build trust; evidence does. Repeatability, reliability, and the ability to understand when systems are helping, and when they’re not.
For Australia, which is grappling with a decades-long productivity plateau, AI is positioned as a long-overdue breakthrough. Rather than squeezing more hours from workers or pushing for unsustainable growth, AI can deliver a smarter road to success. It can boost output and efficiency using the same, or even fewer, resources. But productivity gains only materialise when AI systems are observable, governable, and accountable. Without that, AI risks obscuring inefficiencies rather than eliminating them.
This isn’t just a technological shift, it’s a change in how organisations decide what, and who, they trust.
Measured action, not speculation
The greatest opportunity with AI isn’t in speculation about what it might achieve in the future. It’s in disciplined action today, measuring what already exists
The organisations worth watching aren’t necessarily the ones deploying the most AI. They’re the ones instrumenting it properly.
They’re tracking performance, cost, reliability, security, and compliance before expanding scope or autonomy. They understand that scaling AI without visibility doesn’t accelerate value. It accelerates risk.
As AI-driven systems redefine workflows and decision-making, they introduce environments that are far more dynamic than traditional software. Availability, security, compliance, performance, and cost can no longer be treated as static concerns. They change in real time, shaped by models, prompts, infrastructure, and data.
Success will come from focusing on what’s achievable now: building strong data foundations, strengthening trust, and putting the right measures in place before tackling more complex challenges. And while AI adoption appears widespread, trust remains the missing ingredient.
A University of Melbourne survey found 66% of people use AI regularly, including in their work, and 83% believe AI will deliver a wide range of benefits. Yet only 46% are willing to trust AI systems.
That gap is a signal: Trust isn’t automatic, it’s earned.
Know before you scale
Although AI introduces unprecedented opportunity, it also brings new forms of operational risk. Models behave probabilistically, outputs vary, and tools interact in ways that haven’t been tested at enterprise scale. When systems behave unpredictably and organisations can’t explain why, confidence erodes.
Trust doesn’t grow from outcomes alone. It grows from understanding. Organisations must adopt a dual approach: integrating AI where it adds value, while also developing robust monitoring and governance for their own AI systems.
Observability isn’t a capability AI needs in order to function. It’s a safeguard for the organisations deploying it. It allows leaders to answer fundamental questions: Is this system behaving as intended? Is it safe to scale? Is it earning autonomy?
Accountability builds trust
AI didn’t suddenly arrive with generative models. It has quietly shaped our daily lives for years, often earning trust because its behaviour was constrained, measurable, and predictable.
Yes, recently we’ve seen some agents misbehave, such as xAI’s Grok making inappropriate comments or various new chatbots and generative AI systems providing false, altered, and sometimes completely made-up information.
But more commonly, just less headline grabbing, is the truth: These incidents stand out because many other AI systems are functioning as intended, without fanfare.
However, trust doesn’t come from seeing results alone. To unlock real value, organisations must understand what their AI is doing and the tangible benefits it delivers. This requires tracing decisions, understanding failures, and intervening when systems drift.
Observability reveals whether AI is delivering consistent, meaningful results, but visibility alone isn’t enough. AI must respond, adapt, and improve in measurable ways. Trust grows when people see AI systems identifying issues, surfacing insights, and enabling informed action rather than silently compounding errors.
As agentic AI continues to emerge, new safeguards become non-negotiable. Monitoring complex workflows, iterating prompts safely, optimising infrastructure performance, and deploying layered security must all be part of the equation. Crucially, this observability and security must span the entire AI lifecycle, not added on later.
Trust what you can see
Observability is transparency with accountability, helping the right AI systems earn trust, and keep that trust intact as systems develop. It encourages fast execution and the implementation of appropriate guardrails to proactively manage issues and embed continuous learning. It also prevents perfection from becoming the enemy of good. Sustained investment in measurement, governance, and visibility will separate leaders from laggards.
The future of AI isn’t distant. It’s already embedded in how organisations operate. The question is no longer whether to use it, but whether we can see it clearly enough to trust it responsibly.
We didn’t trust GPS because it replaced paper maps. We trusted it because it showed us where we were, where we were going, and when it recalculated. AI deserves the same standard.
Instead of second-guessing where AI might take us one day, we should focus on understanding the route we’re already on, and whether the systems guiding us have truly earned our confidence.
