Indonesia’s PT KAI bolsters email security, data governance with Zimbra

PT Kereta Api Indonesia (PT KAI), a state-owned railway operator, partnered with Zimbra to upgrade its legacy email platform with a more secure and scalable alternative.

Zimbra’s Network Edition helps PT KAI gain full control over its communications infrastructure, ensure data security and compliance, and improve system reliability across a vast national network.

The new system integrates with PT KAI’s existing IT environment, enabling better identity verification and operational coordination for more than 28,000 employees.

“Our partnership with Zimbra allows us to meet our current compliance requirements while preparing for future challenges,” said Bagit Airlangga, manager of IT Application and Data Center, at PT KAI. “With local deployment, full encryption, and seamless system integration, we are able to ensure operational efficiency across our national network.”

Marcus Teo, chief revenue officer at Zimbra, said that this partnership underscores our commitment to supporting both resilience and regulatory alignment with the public sector and beyond.

These deployments highlight growing awareness among public institutions in Indonesia around the importance of digital self-reliance. As regulators stress the need for in-country data storage, Zimbra’s on-premises, open-standard platform promises a reliable path forward.

Future phases are under consideration to expand the deployments further, both within the respective institutions and potentially across other regulated sectors.

Zimbra said the partnership serves as a model for secure, policy-aligned transformation as Indonesia advances toward its digital economy goals.

The company works closely with government bodies, financial services firms and SMBs across the region, with priority markets including Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand.

“We intend to invest in its SEA expansion in the coming months, supporting the region’s digital modernisation efforts while helping organisations maintain control over their data and communication infrastructure,” said Ivy Lee, APJ VP of Sales at Zimbra.
