Google has unveiled a multi-pronged initiative to strengthen Singapore’s cybersecurity landscape using Artificial Intelligence (AI). This includes a renewed collaboration with the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore (CSA) to strengthen national cyber defenses, the adoption of advanced AI-powered security by public sector agencies, and new programs to help local businesses and individuals defend against digital threats.
Google and CSA have renewed their collaborative efforts through a Memorandum of Cooperation that will, among other things, facilitate AI-driven intelligence sharing on cyber threats, enable joint operations against malicious activities, technical collaboration on AI-powered security solutions, as well as capacity building efforts.
This builds on efforts from 2023, including a dedicated AI agents sandbox between Google, GovTech, CSA and IMDA to test agentic solutions for public sector use cases to get ahead of evolving risks.
“As AI permeates more aspects of our everyday lives, AI security has become more critical, especially when it comes to developing areas like agentic AI. We welcome the efforts of Google, and look forward to continued collaboration to advance our shared mission of building a safer cyberspace for all users,” said David Koh, chief executive of CSA.
Royal Hansen, VP of engineering at Google, said that in tilting the balance from attackers to defenders to strengthen cyber resilience,, technology is just one piece of the puzzle.
“Which is why public-private partnerships such as the one between Google and CSA are a strategic imperative to help us deploy, learn and iterate on how we can leverage AI successfully for cybersecurity,” said Hansen.
The increasing use of AI in the public sector demands advanced security, which is why government agencies like the Government Technology Agency of Singapore (GovTech Singapore) has adopted Google Cloud Cybershield.
Cybershield addresses traditional defense weaknesses like fragmented data, limited attacker insight, and talent gaps by providing AI and intel-driven national-scale cyber defense.
This is achieved through two pillars — a nationwide Security Operations Center (SOC) that enables federated threat detection and expert guidance from Mandiant to build national security capabilities, ensuring the agencies can proactively and confidently defend against threats.
To help individuals better defend against online fraud, Google is launching “Be Scam Ready,” an interactive game that trains users to spot the manipulation techniques commonly used by scammers. By exposing people to weakened versions of these tactics in a safe environment, the game helps build psychological resilience against future scam attempts.
In addition, Google has recently rolled out new security features on Google Messages to help users avoid and spot scams. This includes “Safer links” on Messages that now warns users when they click on any suspicious links within a message suspected as spam, and stops them from visiting the potentially harmful website, unless they explicitly mark the message as “not spam.”
Further, Android’s new “Key Verifier” tool on Messages protects users from impersonators and fraudsters by allowing users to scan a QR code for trusted contacts, adding extra assurance that their end-to-end encrypted messages are truly private with the right person on the other end.
